AROUND SOURI - THE LOCAL AREA

Crete is Greece's largest island in the Mediterranean, is known for its varied terrain, which ranges from fine-sand beaches at Elafonisi to the White Mountains. Mt. Ida, the tallest of the range, is home to the Ideon Cave, which was the birthplace of Zeus, according to Greek mythology. The capital, Heraklion, is home to the renowned Heraklion Archaeological Museum, housing Minoan artefacts, and Knossos, a Bronze Age settlement.

Souri is located in North West Crete, in the Chania district.

Litsarda (2 km), is a quiet village about 5 minutes drive away with British shop, cafe and pizzeria/ taverna.  Not really for sightseers, more for getting those last minute bits.

Georgioupolis (7.6 km), is a small town nearby and my favorite, which features a large square surrounded with tavernas and cafes and assorted shops. This little town has a wonderful atmosphere, where everything is close by.  Georgioupolis is especially known for its rich bird and animal life such as turtle river, as well as the sandy beach and great sea bathing along with a large public swimming pool, situated in a hotel complex, which is open to visitors.

You can paddle up the river to watch the Turtles in a canoe or Kayak which are availiable to hire, takes about 1 hour.

Vamos (5.3 km), is situated near Souri with excellent amenities (tavernas, cafes, bars, supermarkets, bakery, bank / cash machine etc.). Vamos also offers cultural events such as sports and music events all year round – in calm surroundings with friendly people.

Almyrida (9 km),  is a stunning sea-side resort, with plenty of bars and a nice beach

Vrisai (6.8 km),  is another one of my favorite villages.  A beautiful stream runs through the village center, surrounded by Tavernas on either side.  A great place to stop for a light bite or evening meal.

Chania (35 km),  is a big charming city with culture and history. The old quarter of the city around the Venetian harbor has a wonderful atmosphere with its many old buildings and narrow streets. Enjoying lunch sitting outside one of the many tavernas on the harbor is an experience you won’t forget.

Rethymno (31.7 km),  is a beautiful port and bustiling ancient Greek city packed full of character and charm.

Lake Kournas (12.4 km),  is the only fresh water lake in Crete and lies about 20m above sea level.  It has tavernas which offer traditional Cretan dishes and cafes on one side, with a parade of shops leading down to the waters edge.  Rent a pedalo and venture to a secluded part of the lake for a swim or use a sun lounger provided by the local bars.  A great day out with the kids, or a lovely late afternoon romantic destination.

We can easily spend 3 hours here, with an hour on the water/swimming, a snack in a taverna and browsing the local shops.

Argiroupoli (24.2 km),  Agis Dinamis just outside of the village is a fantastic place to eat, with waterfalls throughout the traditional Greek restaurant, with fresh Trout as a speciality dish.  Have a snack, a beer or a full dinner.  Surrounded by trees giving pleanty of shade it is just the perfect location to sit and watch life go by.

Crete the beautiful Greek Mediterranean island.
